iFly GPS runs on any device. Really?

iFly GPS is the only flight planning and navigation app with a complete, uniform feature-set across iOS, Android and Windows.  This means iFly GPS runs on iPhones, iPads, Android Phones, Android Tablets, Windows Tablets and Windows Desktops.  We strive to be an open product that runs on the devices our pilots own.  Oh — we also run on our own Aviation Portable line!

If I have iFly GPS, does the FAA still require me to carry paper charts?
Technically the FAA has never *required* private pilots to carry sectional charts, this is a myth. The specific FAA regulation, FAR 91.103 “Preflight Actions,” states that each pilot in command shall, before beginning a flight, become familiar with all available information concerning that flight.

Here is what the FAA has to say about this question:

Does the iFly Aviation Portable have a battery?
Yes, both the 740 and 740b have an internal battery for emergency purposes.  It will charge off of 12/24v systems and then transition to the back-up battery if external power is lost.  The devices will run on internal power for 20-30 minutes at full brightness.

The iFly 520 has its own internal battery. The iFly 520’s internal battery will last approximately 2 hours.

The iFly 700/720 requires external power.  All models include AC and DC (cig lighter style) adapters, and supports both 12v and 24v systems.

Do the iFly Aviation Portable devices support WAAS? (The FAA's system to improve GPS accuracy)

Yes.  WAAS functionality is enabled on the iFly 520/700/720/740 and the new iFly 740b.  (However they are not approved by the FAA for primary IFR navigation, or for use in instrument approaches as it’s classified as a portable navigation device).

Is there a port for an external antenna on the iFly Aviation Portable?
Yes, the 700/720/740/740b includes an MCX connector for an external antenna.   The iFly 520 has a non-MCX connector, therefore it is recommended to only use the External Antenna available on our store.  However the built-in GPS is very sensitive and we’ve had a strong signal in every plane we’ve tested without needing an external antenna.

Note: The use of an external antenna is recommended when panel mounting on the panel or recessing into the panel using a method similar to the AirGizmo Panel Dock.

Are the approach/departure charts geo-referenced? (In other words, can you track your flight on these charts?)
Yes. Geo-referenced Approach Plates and Airport Diagrams were released in our Version 6 Software Update.  Our iFly Aviation Portables ship complete with a full database of Approach Plates and more. (Note: Geo-Referenced Airport Diagrams and RealView Airport Images are included in the VFR Data Subscription.  The Enhanced VFR/IFR Data subscription is needed to maintain and update the Approach Plates and IFR Low and High Enroutes.  Data will never stop showing, nor will it be auto-deleted.)
What all does the iFly Aviation Portable purchase price include?
When you purchase any iFly GPS Package you will receive the following.

  • Fully Loaded iFly GPS (740b / 740 / 720 / 520 ).
  • Suction mount.
  • Remote control (740b /740 / 720 only).
  • AC and DC adapters.
  • SD Card Adapter (520 only).
  • Soft case.
  • 2 Months of VFR/IFR Data and Software Updates.
  • Free Shipping on GPS packages over $500 for a limited time.
Is a data subscription required? I've heard the screen will go blank if they expire.
No. The iFly GPS App will continue to function as usual and expired sectionals will remain visible on the unit. You will receive a brief notification that you are viewing an expired chart and then the message will disappear. However a subscription is needed to keep the data current on the device. With such a low annual cost, it just makes sense to practice good safety and fly with current data.

Our standard VFR subscription provides one of the best values in aviation. It allows unlimited data and application updates for everything except the IFR Enroute charts and IFR Plates.  The Enhanced VFR/IFR Subscription, which includes the High/Low-Enroute IFR charts and IFR Approach Plates is avaible as an add-on.  Keep in mind that a current subscription will also ensure you get the latest and greatest App features!  Check our store for the latest options.

Is the iFly Aviation Portable a FAA Certified GPS?
No, nor can any portable GPS be. This is a portable GPS designed to aid navigation, but it is not intended to be your primary source of navigation, airport information, TFRs, airspaces, or anything else. You should always consult FSS or ATC prior to any flight.
Are the maps always oriented North-Up, or can it be oriented Track-Up? Can I mount the Aviation Portable Vertically or in Portrait Mode?
All Charts can be oriented both North-Up and Track-Up (as of latest software update) in the iFly GPS App.Version 9 Software adds Seamless HD charts for an improved experience in either mode.

We’ve also added the support for Portrait Mode to the iFly 740b, 740, 720, and 700.  Now the iFly Aviation Portable can be oriented both horizontally and vertically.  The iFly 520 currently supports Landscape view only at this time.

Is the Aviation Portable screen readable in sunlight?
Yes.  The new iFly 740b offers unprecedented sunlight readability with a 1100 nit touchscreen while the 740 hits the meter at 1300 nits, that’s double the brightness of the iFly 720 and 2-3 times the iPad or average Android tablet.  Below is a picture of a full sun comparison of the iFly 740 on the right and the 720 on the left.  While the 720 is sunslight readable, you can see how impressive the new 740 screen is.

The iFly 520/720 offers Sunlight Readability with more than double the effective “nits” of the iFly 700 and popular tablets like the iPad.  This technology uses the sunlight to brighten the screen.  If you have a brighter interior or bubble canopy, we highly recommend the iFly 520 or 720.

The iFly 700 offers an industry standard screen (for the technically minded, it is rated at over 350 NITS). However, in extreme conditions direct/unfiltered sunlight can hit the iFly 700 screen at the angle that can degrade visibility. We have thousands of pilots flying a variety of aircraft with the iFly.  We do offer a personalized Sun Visor that fits the iFly 520/700 and 720 for those extreme conditions.  However it is very rare that the 520/720 would need that Sun Visor. Please visit our store to see additional iFly accessories.

If the device loses power, or it's turned off, do you need to do anything to restore your flight plan?
No, any active flight plan is automatically retained for when power is restored. The iFly 740b, iFly 740 and iFly 520 have an internal battery so a power loss will result in uninterrupted service.
Is there a Yoke Mount option?
Yes, we currently offer a yoke mount kit for the 740b/740/720/700/520 models. This optional kit is comprised of high-quality RAM components.  In the event you already have a RAM mount, we also offer a RAM mount adapter for each model.  A suction mount is included with GPS purchases, and these yoke mount accessories are great optional items to compliment your iFly Aviation Portable.  Check out all the great accessories in our online Shop.
Can you scroll ahead the flight path to view upcoming airports/Class B, C, D airpsaces, etc?
Yes, you can certainly scroll ahead. You can zoom in, pan through your entire plan just by sweeping your finger to drag the map. Or you can zoom way out…when zoomed out, class B, C, and D airspaces are highlighted – as well as all the special use airspaces – so you could at a glance see if you’re going anywhere tricky.
Will iFly GPS show my position on charts other than sectionals? Like WAC, TAC, IFR Enroute, etc?
Yes.  iFly GPS also has the ability to layer NEXRAD, Metars, TAF, Fuel prices,SIGMET/AIRMETS etc over any VFR or IFR.  Weather products require Wi-Fi or a connection to a third party ADS-B receiver.

Currently the iFly GPS includes the following Geo-Referenced Chart Data:

  • VFR Sectionals, TACs, WACs (Seamless in V9 and beyond)
  • Low and High Enroute IFR Charts (Highs and Seamless added in V9 and beyond)
  • Approach Plates
  • Airport Diagrams
  • RealView Airports (nearly 13000 geo-referenced airport images)

Support for additional charts may be added in future releases.  (Existing iFly GPS users with a valid subscription will be able to upgrade their software as features are added)

How is the iFly Aviation Portable updated with the latest sectionals, databases, TFRs, software, etc?
The iFly Aviation Portable can be updated via 3 simple methods.  The iFly 740b/740 and 720 can use all three methods while the iFly 700 and 520 can use iFly Connect and USB updating, but not Wi-Fi.

1. Wi-Fi Updating.

  • Connect your iFly 740b/740 or 720 to a wireless network and simply touch Update from the Main Boot page. The iFly 740b/740 / 720 will generate a list of updates.
  • Click Install and the device will do the rest.

2. iFly Connect is a PC based automated updater that performs updates directly to the SD card.

  • Simply remove your SD card from the iFly Aviation Portable and insert into your internet connected Windows XP or beyond PC. (Note: Do not ever Format an SD card, this will remove critical files.)
  • Install iFly Connect from the Update Tab on this website.  (Note: you only need to install iFly Connect once.)
  • Click iFly Connect, located in the Adventure Pilot folder within Programs.
  • iFly Connect will generate a list of updates, click Install and the iFly will do the rest.

3.  A USB Flash Drive or the SD Card is used to update the GPS. The USB/SD update process is simple:

  • Insert your USB Flash Drive or SD Card into an internet connected computer.
  • Login on the iFly GPS website and select what you wish to update and click Create Update Package. An Update Package File will be created.
  • Save the file to your USB Flash Drive or root of the SD Card.
  • Move the USB Flash Drive or SD card to the iFly Aviation Portable, power the unit on.
    • On the iFly 520/720/740/740b select the “Update” option on the main menu.
    • On the iFly 700 you should be prompted that an Update was found.
  • Confirm and Install.  Click OK once complete.

Note: Many people have at least one USB Flash Drive, so we do not include this with the device.  However we offer them on our online store for those who need one.  Additionally, if your PC does not have a SD Card Slot we offer a SD Card Reader on our online Shop as well.

Does iFly GPS support IFR charts?
iFly GPS includes a complete set of FAA provided STAR, Approach, and Departure charts.  Our aviation portables comes pre-loaded with IFR Low-Enroute charts for the lower 48 states.

The Version 9 (and beyond) App update adds High-Altitude IFR Enroute Charts and the ability to overlay all Plates and Charts as a partially transparent layer over any VFR or IFR chart.  There is also a new Plate tools feature.

Are maps of Canada, Europe or other countries available?
Currently, U.S. charts and data are available on iFly GPS.  Plans to develop additional countries are in the works, beginning with Canada, Europe, Australia and South America respectively based on demand.

We are currently working with Nav Canada in an effort to offer a full Canadian data option. Nav Canada is currently developing digitized charts at this time.  We are very hopeful that we will be able to offer a full Canadian Data option in the near future.

Many Canadian pilots living along the US/Canada border in the eastern territories find iFly GPS offers more than adequate information.  Our US Charts on the iFly cover up to the 48th latitude (Near Thunder Bay and eastward) and our airport database includes most public Canadian airports.

Note:  We recently added WAC Charts so the Western Coast of Canada to Alaska is now covered.  This also added additional coverage for the Caribbean and Mexico.

Can you save/load flight plans?
Yes.  There is a comprehensive flight plan management system in iFly GPS.  You can even import GPX files from other flight planning software or websites like iFlightPlanner, EnFlight, Flightsoft, AOPA FlightPlanner, and others using a USB Flash Drive (for our aviation portables) or loading the file into a specific directory for Android or Windows.

For the Android: place the GPX or KML file in {SdCard}/Android/data/iFly.GPS/files/iFly/#FlightPlans.

For Windows: place the GPX or KML file in C:\_iFlyGPS_Data\User\#FlightPlans

Does the iFly Aviation Portable work in aircraft with a 24 volt electrical system?
Yes, the iFly Aviation Portable (740b/740//720/700/520) is designed to operate between 12 and 28 volts.  The power plugs on the units and the batteries are also the same.  The External Battery can be used on the 520/700/720/740/740b without modification.  We even have a universal DC Hardwire that fits our devices.
What are the physical dimensions of your aviation portables?
  • iFly 740b measures 7.25″ x 4.5″ x 0.82″ and weighs 14.5 ounces
